The municipality of Casola is in a mountainous area between the Apennines and the chain Apuan. Casola rises in Lunigiana and its origins are ancient, as demonstrated by the findings on the spot. It was a possession by the ninth century, the bishop of Luni that belonged to the family of Val di Magra. Towards the end of the fifteenth century was made Casola domain of Florence, to become a podestà.
